Lobster mayhem hits Maine!
Take a road trip up to Maine this summer and be hit by Lobster fever as the towns of Rockland and Camden in the breath-taking Penobscot Bay host the 67th Maine Lobster Festival from 29 July to 2 August.
Set to be bigger and better than ever in 2015 the festival has grown to be a highlight of the foodie calendar and this year will serve up a whopping 20,000 lbs of famous mouth-watering Maine Lobster with a 1,700 lbs pinch of Cabot butter.
It is here that foodies will savour some of the best in New England seafood, ranging from an ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffet of traditional Maine lobster cooked using the ‘world’s largest lobster cooker’ to stacks of the State’s famous lobster rolls, lobster Caesar wraps, lobster Caesar salads, fried clams, Maine shrimp, mussels and traditional fare.
The annual cooking contest on Friday 31 July will also see ambitious cooks compete to offer travellers the best lobster dishes in an attempt to secure the coveted status of winning recipe.
Special entertainment includes an extravagant Lobster Parade on Saturday 1 August complete with massive lobster floats and a marching band, and an International Lobster Crate Race on Sunday 2 August which will see daring participants from around the world risk falling into the Penobscot Bay by darting across floating crates to the finish line.
Active travellers can also burn off all that buttery lobster by taking part in a number of running events including a 10k race, 5k race and 1 mile kids fun run, while singer song writers, a ‘Maine Sea Goddess’ beauty pageant, tours of US Navy ships, marine life exhibitions and art shows provide further entertainment for travellers looking to soak up the local culture.
