MAINE
MUST SEES
- North of Portland, rocky fingers of land punctuate the coastline. Drive down these promontories to find hidden coves, fishing villages and popular resorts, such as Boothbay Harbor.
- In Ogunquit, visit the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. Dubbed ‘the most beautiful little museum in the world’, it has views straight out to sea.
- Maine has always attracted artists, such as Frank Benson and Gilbert Stuart. See their works at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, where the Wyeth Center features three generations of painters from the Wyeth family.
- Long a holiday destination, ‘The Kennebunks’ are actually three communities. Go for a sail or a sightseeing cruise; join a walking tour to see 18th-and early 19th-century homes and churches; or, just lounge on a beach.
- Who needs thrill rides when you can go whitewater rafting? From The Forks, 90 miles north of Augusta, take a 12-mile trip through the Kennebec Gorge or the 16 mile-run on the Dead River, the longest continuous stretch of whitewater in the East.
MAINE
On a country road on the outskirts of Cape Porpoise, Maine, there’s what can only be described as a shack... This is Nunan’s Lobster Hut and it serves the sweetest, juiciest, freshest lobster on either side of the Atlantic. And because it’s a shack, you pay shack prices...
