CONNECTICUT
MUST SEES
- At Mystic Seaport, nautical history comes alive at the Museum of America and the Sea. At this recreation of a 19th-century coastal village, board historic sailing ships, watch restoration work using traditional methods, pop into an old-fashioned printing shop or rigging loft. New is Cangarda, a 1901 steam yacht.
- Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration is equally absorbing, thanks to real hands-on displays. Peer at a piranha; touch a Beluga whale; and learn all about the search for the Titanic.
- Ten years old is the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center, one of the USA’s best Native American museums. Near Ledyard.
- Essex is a classic riverside town, with gracious homes and a 200- year-old inn. Ride the Essex Steam Train up to Deep River, then take a cruise on the Connecticut River.
- Famous for its musicals, the 19th century Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam makes a delightful night out. Out of town is the mock medieval Gillette Castle, built by actor William Gillette 90 years ago.
