A Nation Remembers at the JFK Presidential Library & Museum

Through February 23, 2014
John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum - Boston, MA

John Fitzgerald Kennedy, thirty-fifth President of the United States, was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. Remember this emotional moment in US History with a visit to the JFK Library in the winter of 2014. Special artifacts from the funeral will be on display, including the flag that was draped over the fallen President’s coffin and the Green Beret placed  at his grave site.


Ice Castle at Loon Mountain

Through March 2014
Loon Mountain – Lincoln, New Hampshire

A special spectacle this winter at Loon Mountain in New Hampshire – an enormous Ice Castle with walls of giant icicles extending 25-40 feet in the air. Made by Utah-based artist Brent Christensen and his crew, this free form castle is open through March for daytime and evening tours. At night, multicolored lights embedded in the ice give it an otherworldly glow.


Save the Bay Seal Tours

From November through April, Save The Bay offers one-hour seasonal seal watching tours aboard the M/V Alletta Morris from Long Wharf Dock in Newport, Rhode Island. Bundle up and don’t forget the camera!

The Annual Moby Dick Marathon

New Bedford Whaling Museum – New Bedford, Massachusetts

The New Bedford Whaling Museum’s Moby-Dick Marathon celebrates its annual non-stop reading of Herman Melville’s literary masterpiece with a 2-day program of entertaining activities and events. Since 1995, the Museum has marked the anniversary of Herman Melville’s 1841 departure from the Port of New Bedford and Fairhaven aboard the whale ship Acushnet with this midwinter tradition, which attracts hundreds of Melville enthusiasts from all walks of life.

Conway Scenic Railroad – North Conway, New Hampshire

A special charter by the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Enthusiasts, this excursion is open to the public. Departing from the North Conway station for Sawyers River, the train will be powered by the 1921 Steam Locomotive #7470. On the return trip, numerous stops will be made for photo “run-bys,” so be sure to bring your camera! Reservations can also be made online. 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Championship at TD Garden

January 5-12, 2014
TD Garden - Boston, Massachusetts (championship level events)

The U.S. Championships are returning to Boston for the seventh time in the event’s history. The 2014 U.S. Championships are the final qualifying event prior to the selection of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team, and Team USA”s members will be announced at the conclusion of the championships. Team members will represent the United States at the XXII Olympic Winter Games, to be held in Sochi, Russia, February 7 – 23, 2014. Held since 1914, the annual event is the nation”s most prestigious figure skating event, with past winners including Michelle Kwan, Kristi Yamaguchi, Scott Hamilton, Evan Lysacek, and Massachusetts natives Nancy Kerrigan of Woburn and Todd Eldredge of Chatham. Champions will be crowned in 20 events: ladies, men’s, pairs, and ice dancing at the senior, junior, novice, intermediate and juvenile levels of the U.S.Figure Skating competitive structure.


Boston Celtic Music Festival 2014

January 10-11, 2014
Cambridge, Massachusetts

This event showcases Greater Boston’s best musicians, singers, and dancers from Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton and other Celtic traditions. BCMFest hosts an annual weekend-long festival that features more than 100 performers. Throughout the year, BCMFest organizes the Celtic Music Cruise, Boston Urban Ceilidh and monthly Celtic Music Monday Sessions at Club Passim, which spotlight local Celtic musicians and singers.


VINS Nature Center Winter Wildlife Celebration

Explore local winter wildlife with knowledgeable educators and relax by the campfire with refreshments. Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) offers outdoor exhibits of owls, eagles, falcons and other birds of prey, as well as flight demonstrations, ecology programs about the landscape and wildlife of Vermont, walking trails and a nature shop featuring science kits, field guides, binoculars, toys and gifts.


Moonlit Snowshoe Tours at Great Glen Trails

In the shadow of Mount Washington, experience the wonder of a winter walk on the moonlit snow. Join an AMC Naturalist Guide on a guided full moon snowshoe walk.  Adventurers will use all senses (and no flashlights) to navigate the trails. Listen for owls calling and more as the group explores the winter landscape by light of the full moon. Reservations required. For family-friendly lodging, the nearby Appalachian Mountain Club’s Joe Dodge Lodge offers special packages that include meals.


TD Eastern Cup Weekend at Black Mountain

Black Mountain Ski Trails - Rumford, Maine

One great feature of the Eastern Cup is that although it attracts some of the nation’s top skiers, it’s not just for the very fastest cross-country ski racers. Athletes of all speeds get to compete side-by-side. This race is open to the public and quite a sight to see.


Billings Farm JANUARY Sleigh Ride Weekend

Billings Museum & Farm – Woodstock, Vermont

Enjoy horse-drawn sleigh rides through the frosty farm fields, go sledding on jack jumper sleds, visit the dairy farm and restored farmhouse, view farm programs and participate in hands-on activities.  Across the street, cross-country ski or snowshoe on trails at the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park (rentals nearby).  The picturesque town of Woodstock is a delight with fun shops and eateries, and several covered bridges and country stores are in the area.  A perfect winter weekend getaway.


Annual Stowe Winter Carnival

New England Air Museum - Open Cockpit Sunday

January 19, 2014
Windsor Locks, Connecticut

Visitors will be permitted to climb into the cockpits of up to 12 vintage aircraft, a full-motion flight simulator and the Flight Sim Spot. The aircraft include the WWII P-47D Thunderbolt, the North American F-100 Super Sabre, the F-104 Starfighter, several helicopters and more.  As an added feature, the Wings & Wheels Modelers Club will present a show featuring hundreds of plastic scale models of airplanes, military vehicles, figures, ship and cars.  There will be ongoing demonstrations by modelers who will be working on and building models throughout the day. A food vendor will be on site serving sandwiches, snacks and hot & cold drinks. The event will be held inside the Museum’s three large, heated display hangars.


Winter Rendezvous Gay Ski Week in Vermont

January 22-26, 2014
Stowe, Vermont

The longest running Gay Ski Week in New England is returning to Stowe, Vermont with expected attendance of about 500. Rendezvous attendance comes primarily from the northeast and Canada, with a few people coming from as far away as London and Germany. About 80 percent are men, 20 percent are women, and a few families attend as well. Some have been coming since Winter Rendezvous’ inception 30 years ago. Winter Rendezvous organizes a variety of winter activities-skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dogsledding-but there are plenty of other activities, such as shopping and spending an afternoon at a spa. Day trippers from Burlington and other nearby towns are welcome as well for the entire five days or for specific events. Tickets can be purchased online in advance or at the door for single activities, such as concerts, dinner parties, and the wildly popular pool party, held this year at the Trapp Family Lodge.

This fun winter event celebrates the snowmobile.  Watch exciting races across the lake and enjoy snowmobile displays, kid’s events, a snowmobile parade and fireworks. Try out a snowmobile ride or take a new Ski Plane Scenic flight (or helicopter ride) to see the action from up high. This is also Snowmobile Reciprocity Weekend between Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont in which anyone with a sled registered in any of the three states can ride in all three states. Early registration is advised for rides.


Annual SMUGGLERS' NOTCH PASS ICE CLIMBING EVENT & Heritage Winter Festival

January 23-25, 2014
Smuggler's Notch, Vermont

A weekend of gear demos, clinics for the beginner to advanced climber, multimedia slideshows, dry tooling competition, raffles and camaraderie in Vermont’s premier ice climbing destination, Smuggler’s Notch.  At the Smugglers’ Notch Resort, it’s the Heritage Festival on Saturday, January 25.  Come celebrate Winter with a guided snowshoeing nature walk at Smugglers’ Nordic Center, and sleigh rides, children’s story hour, a community dinner, family contra dance, bonfire and fireworks. The Primitive Biathlon is on Saturday and Sunday at the Sterling Ridge Inn near Smuggs; spectators are welcome.


NEW HAMPSHIRE Snow Sculpting Winterfest at Black Mountain

January 24-26, 2014
Black Mountain – Jackson, New Hampshire

Sculptors create magical snow art for everyone to enjoy. Each team will be given a cylinder shaped block of snow four feet in diameter by eight feet tall to create snow sculptures. Judging is based on creativity, technique and message. Other activities planned for the long weekend include; Sleigh Rides, welcome dinner reception and bonfire, plus S’Mores and other fun desserts!


Taste of Chocolate Festival in Harvard Square

Old Sturbridge Village Fire & Ice Days

Old Sturbridge Village embraces the joys of an old fashioned winter with a “Fire and Ice” celebration, complete with ice skating, sledding on vintage 1830s sleds, and horse-drawn sleigh rides. Visitors can watch the Mill Pond ice harvested with vintage ice-cutting tools and learn how early New Englanders cut blocks of ice and shipped them around the world before the invention of electrical refrigeration. Afterwards, guests can warm up with hot cider, stories, songs and fireside tales at the Bullard Tavern.


Annual Pies on Parade® Tour - Rockland, Maine

It is given to performers voted to have made a “lasting and impressive contribution to the world of entertainment.” The Woman of the Year is given a day of celebration, including a colorful parade in her honor through Harvard Square.
