Boston: GETTING AROUND
Getting to Boston is easy. Millions of visitors from North America and around the world fly into “Logan”, the very convenient Boston Logan International Airport, just minutes from downtown.
GETTING INTO THE CITY FROM THE AIRPORT
By car/taxi: From Logan Airport into downtown Boston takes about 10-20+ minutes, depending on traffic. The taxi fare is about $20-$30 (more for elsewhere in the city and Cambridge)
- Free Hotel Shuttles: Some airport hotels offer a complimentary shuttle service to and from Logan Airport. For downtown hotels, you will need to take a taxi and/or the water shuttle.
- On-Airport Shuttle: This free service connects the airport terminals, the Water Shuttle Dock and the Airport subway (Blue Line) station. Check the bus numbers; different numbers follow different routes.
- Logan Express is used by locals to reach the suburbs (Braintree, Framingham, Woburn, Peabody).
- Water Transport: Another convenient way to get to downtown is by boat – with great views of the city! The Number 66 airport shuttle bus connects terminals with Logan’s Water Shuttle dock; vessels take 7 minutes to go direct to downtown Boston (fares $10). Services include the MBTA Harbor Express, Boston Harbor Water Taxi, and City Water Taxi.
GETTING AROUND: IN BOSTON
- Boston is a walking city; there is no need for a car. Instead, use the MBTA, the excellent and comprehensive transport system known as the “T”. Logan is served by the Blue Line and the Silver Line SL1 bus rapid transit service.
- Buy the bargain-priced LinkPass, valid for one week ($15) for 7 days of unlimited travel on the “T” (subway), Local Bus, Inner Harbor Ferry, and Commuter Rail Zone 1A.
GETTING AROUND: CAR RENTALS
Start your car rental when you leave the city to tour New England. All the major car rental agencies are located at or near Logan; some also have locations downtown. Choose the most convenient location for your journey. Some travelers prefer to pick up their car at Logan, as it is easy to exit the city from the airport …and easy to return the car before flying home.
GETTING TO BOSTON BY TRAIN
Acela Express is Amtrak’s fast efficient service from New York City to Boston. At speeds of up to 150 mph, this comfortable journey takes less than 4 hours.
Within New England, train service is somewhat limited for travelers. Some stations are not in walking distance of lodging and/or attractions, and many regions do not have train service. Check Amtrak’s schedule for specific destinations.
GETTING AROUND BY BUS
From Boston, it is easy to get to New England destinations and further points, such as New York City, by bus. Please note that within the New England region, some bus stations are not in walking distance of lodging and/or attractions so this type of travel requires extra planning.
Companies include Bolt Bus, C&J, Concord Coach Lines, Greyhound, LimoLiner, Lucky Star, Megabus, Peter Pan Bus Lines, Plymouth & Brockton and World Wide Bus.
GETTING AROUND ON FOOT
Boston brands itself as a walking city, which is why it has such great appeal to European visitors. As well as a wide array of great walking tours, with excellent and knowledgeable guides, there are bus, trolley, cycle, “duck” and Segway tours, covering everything from history and food to art, architecture and harbor cruises.
